AVARAH is about my life’s work. I’m Sarah Baker Andrus, and for most of my life I have been helping people and businesses move from where they are to where they want to be. Whether it’s in regard to career choices, or strategies for making change, I have advised both individuals and corporations whose intent it is to move forward and grow.
As to what the readers of my blog might want to know – like why I write about career issues, or my favorite drink (you’re dying to know, right? How else can you buy me that drink you promised me if I gave you that special tip that helps you land the job you want?) here’s the elevator version…
I’ve spent my whole career enmeshed in other people’s careers. From my days as a college counselor helping students find internships and new grads find jobs to my work doing all things PR/recruiting related for Vector Marketing (aka CUTCO – yes, the “knife thing!”), I love helping others find work that enriches their lives.
I’m equally passionate about the work I’ve done in helping organizations (for-profit and not-for-profit) grow and adapt to a changing environment.
I’ve been lucky in my own career. I was lucky because I found a great mentor and listened to her. I was lucky because I worked with people of all ages whose choices demonstrated that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. They were amazing role models. I am still lucky because I work with a company that puts tremendous value on personal and professional growth. But, here’s the kicker: I wouldn’t have been so “lucky” if I hadn’t recognized those situations for the great learning opportunities they were.
In my experience, what some see as “luck” is really the synergy of opportunity and hard work. Do you believe that good fortune comes to those who work hard and take advantage of the opportunities in front of them? If you don’t believe that, you can save yourself some time and stop reading right now. You are not going to like anything else I have to say here.
For the rest of you, welcome to the AVARAH blog! I will promise to be direct, hold up a mirror, offer as many tips and suggestions as I can to help you move from where you are to where you want to be. Oh, and, my favorite drink is a dirty martini with Absolut Peppar and blue cheese stuffed olives.
